The Egg – Reborn

I have long been smitten with the mid century modern style, so when I happened upon Restoration Hardware’s ad campaign I was so excited.  Their new line brings styles reminiscent of the 40’s through the 60’s and inspired by various iconic forms and ideas of  the eras.  Desks, chairs and case-goods are clad in polished aluminum that harken back to WWII fighter planes.  A floor lamp  replicates old Hollywood set lights.

What caught my eye, however, was the iconic egg chair originally designed by Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for a hotel he was building.

The look blends mid-century modern with the rustic charm that is Restoration Hardware.  The dark colors and leather upholstery screams masculinity and comfort. Although I love modern design I’m not sure I would an original egg chair (or replica) in my home. It is a little to stark for my style, but I could see me incorporating this Restoration Hardware egg chair in my husband’s office.

I have noticed egg chair replicas popping up in several magazines – Elle Decor for example.  If your style is a bit more modern or if you like a little more color in your environment,  egg chair replicas can be found at several furniture resources -check out Design Within Reach,  Room Service & Hive Modern.

  1. The Egg Chair is one of my favorite mcm pieces too. Restoration Hardware’s version is AWESOME! I had seen the leather take before, but not the hide and leather! Thanks for the enlightenment! 😉
