Shades of Gray – or Maybe a Little Purple

It’s no secret that I love purple, violet, lavender, whatever the tint or shade; I’m a fan.
So naturally I was smitten with this space.
I was immediately attracted to the purple cushions, that darling contrasting garden stool and the gray carpet and benches.  Even the brick wall seems to blend into the color aesthetic.  Isn’t it amazing how featuring a color, even just a little of it, can bring out that same color in another surface.  I don’t normally think of brick as having any hint of purple, but set next to those cushions, the color pops right out, don’t you think?

The lesson here?  Many colors have undertones of other colors.  You may not realize it when looking at the color by itself, in this case a neutral gray, but when set next to the color (purple) it becomes quite obvious.

So, next time you are are choosing colors, look for those underlying tones, they can make or break a color palette.

I’m a little late with this post, we are visiting friends in San Diego and I’m having all kinds of fun helping them get their new house in order.  More about this when I get home next week.
Hope you are having a great weekend!

  1. You’re right! The brick and purple totally work. I wouldn’t have considered that pairing. I bet you’re loving the 2014 Pantone Color of the Year! Radiant orchid is such an interesting shade of purple!

  3. Cyndi, you need to see designer Angie Hranowsky’s designs – amazing. She always incorporates lavenders and purples in her designs, or most of them anyway. Check out her website from her blog on my blogroll or go to http://www.angiehranowsky.com. You will love her! 😉

  5. Ok I just love this. And I am not a fan of the look of brick, at least not an entire wall full of it. But I could live with it if I had that room. Purple and grey are two of my favorite colors. 🙂
